Remember in school how they'd always tell you how bad drugs where ? How if you smoked marygeewanna just one time you'd be coked out meth head by tomorrow, I do. From the Dare program to what our school called "Red Ribbon Week" my generation and some before were inundated with the simple message DRUGS ARE BAD ! Which I mean really is common sense but it's funny how so much focus was put on marijuana than the far more dangerous stuff. Not that I promote smoking the mary jane or anything like that. Anyways one of the biggest ways of shoving the message of DRUGS=BAD down kids throats were psa's. By the time I was a kid you didn't really see drug psa's on TV anymore at least not that I can remember. They were all over the place in the 80's and 90's though. Which is why I'm showing you one from the 70's !
This lovely trippy, pun totally intended, ad comes from the hallowed halls of Hanna-Barbera. The cartoon studio responsible for some of the most iconic TV cartoons, Flintstones, Scooby Doo, Yogi Bear, Jetsons, etc. I can't really give you any specifics of who personally worked on this ad but it's entertaining none the less.
We start off with a match being lit to spark up a J, I think that's what the kids say for a young boy.
The boy in question gets high as a kite, literally floating around with a rainbow trail.
He then begins a short journey making some friends along the way. A joint which leads him to two pills one of the capsule variety and the other rounded.
The two then bring him to some closed doors, they open revealing some apparently drug addicted zombies. He tries in vain to run away but gets dragged in sealing his fate for daring to huff and puff on some weed, grass or whatever slang term you prefer for marywanna.
